First Fridays / Sundre Blues
Watkinsville, GA
Review by Amanda McKay

First Fridays are events put on by the city of Watkinsville (south of Athens) at
the Town Center to increase business and tourism. This, the last First Friday
Event of 2008, was sponsored by designer apparel store, Sundre Blues. This was
an outdoor show; the band set up on a parking lot. The evening was sweltering,
but the sun was setting, and the temperature cooled quickly.

Once again, the Darlings played without Joe. The band was even more comfortable than at their last show without him, having already excelled as a three-piece, but we still missed him. In the outdoor, commerce-oriented format, the set was really laid back. I was surprised to see Chris leap at all.

A teenaged guitarist
watched the show from the sidewalk, occasionally playing along on his acoustic
guitar.
After "Sadder Day," Chris said he was missing the lead guitarist. The teen said,
"That's the rhythm guitarist?? How good is the lead?"

The band later learned that the event was successful and increased business at
the Town Centre and Sundre Blues. We decided to celebrate with ice cream from
the store a few doors down. We walked in and heard - could it be? - "Worms on
the Pavement!" The ice cream shop was playing the album! What a strange song
to hear in an ice cream parlor. An unusual end to an unusual show.
